Trip notes
From the club member's GPS log of the trip (9–11 January 2012), lightly edited, with people's names removed. Conditions may have changed since.
Black Birch Creek: traces of a ground trail in many places, so it is obviously well travelled. Fairly straightforward, but it would be a problem with high rivers. The gorge upstream of the 'Scree' waypoint is spectacular.
Waypoint notes
- Camp site (-43.58527, 170.81586): A nice spot sheltered among the matagouri.
- Dog Kennel hut (-43.58404, 170.80982): You would have to be desperate, but it is at least dry. Dirt floor and no bunks.
- Hut (-43.59151, 170.84019): An old but very habitable hut, obviously actively used by hunters.
- Scree (-43.59205, 170.83773): If travelling up the valley, ascend this scree to find the track bypassing the gorge.
- Water (-43.60981, 170.76278): Possible camping, but not very flat.
